Amazon Rainforest VS. Cows!

Did you know that people are burning down the Amazon Rainforest? Yeah, the big rainforest that practically everyone in the world knows about, is disappearing before our eyes! Farmers want more land for cattle and crops.

They use a technique that they call slash-and-burn to burn it down. They cut down a tree and then burn the stump so that it doesn't grow back. But we need that forest! The forest is home to over 3 million species! There are 2,500 species of trees, one third of all tropical trees that exist on Earth! We can't let all that go. We need to stop them from cutting down the rest of the Amazon Rainforest before it's too late!

The crops they are planting in place on the Amazon Rainforest are rice, citrus fruits, oil palms, coffee, coca, opium, tea, soybeans, cacao, rubber, and bananas. Some of these crops grow better on cleared forest land, so I sort of see why they decided to grow them in place of a ginormous rainforest, but still! Don't they know how many species live there? A huge reason for mass extinction is loss of habitat. This is what's causing it! Cutting down forests! Deforestation is a really big problem, especially this certain rainforest.

I recently became a vegetarian because I know that, even though it doesn't make much of a difference of the amount of meat my family buys, it still makes a small difference and I know that I am helping the animals in the world. Since they want more room for cattle, then eating less food that cows produce and are made into, may help this problem. If there's less demands on hamburgers and cow's milk then maybe the farmers won't see need for extra space for cattle.

Here are some possible solutions for this problem:

  • Go vegetarian or eat less meat, especially beef. I went vegetarian two weeks ago and I hope that it will make a difference in the world, no matter how small. If I eat no meat, then my family won't buy as much meat. If lots of people go vegetarian, lots of families won't buy as much meat. Together, we can limit the amount of meat the world consumes.
  • But if you LOVE hamburgers and don't want to go vegetarian for the sake of hamburgers, try veggie burgers! It might seem weird to think about meat that is made out of vegetables, but I tried some plant-based meatless meat and could barely taste the difference! I don't know if you know about Mark Rober, a science YouTuber, but he fed Bill Gates, the world's fourth richest man, a veggie burger and he didn't even notice it was different!
  • Share my blog. Even just share the word that this is a problem! For so many of my past and future posts, sharing the fact that the problem exists can do so much good! Alerting people of this problem could save the Amazon Rainforest!

Before I finish, I wanted to tell you that everything counts. Every single thing you do to help the earth counts. If you pick up some litter, it counts; choose fruits or vegetables over meat, it counts; take a paper or reusable straw instead of a plastic straw, it counts. Everything counts. Remember that.

Like always, thanks for reading my blog post! I really appreciate each and every person who checks out my blog. Maybe consider following my blog, too! It would make me smile. Together, we can change the world.
