Are We Running Out of Electricity?

It uses money and resources to have electricity, resources like rubber, gold, copper, and iron, but if we waste electricity, we are wasting resources. Resources on Earth are limited, and if we use too many, there could eventually be a fight for the resources and human survival. We cannot use all of them; I really hope it won't come to a fight in the end.

Some people don't even have electricity in the first place, so don't take it for granted and go wasting what some people long for. Be grateful that you at least have electricity and use it sparingly, only when you need to.

As of 2016, 13% of the world did not have access to the internet. This might not seem like what you expected, but note that this amount has shrunk considerably recently. Here, 87% of people had electricity, yet in 1990 it was only 71%.

Did you know only 5.1% of South Sudan has access to electricity? And only 6.4% of Chad? And although 90% of Burundi's population live in rural areas, only 6.5% of it's population has access to electricity! It's devastating how low these numbers are. It would be really hard to survive without electricity with our lifestyle, don't you think? You wouldn't be able to check this blog!

Did you know that the average Canadian household uses 11,135 kWh every year? And that Canada is the third largest producer of hydroelectricity in the world?

Renewable energy is better for the environment because, as it says in the name, it's renewable. Renewable energy comes from things like wind turbines and can be reused. 16.3% of Canada's energy comes from renewable sources. It's not much, but you can help it grow!

As always, the following are solutions you can try to help stop wasting electricity.

  • If you aren't using lights or a device, turn it off. Everyone's heard this one before. For example, if you aren't using your television, keep it off. If no one's in the bathroom, turn the lights off. In fact, make it a habit to turn off the lights in a room on your way out. Let's just hope that nobody's in the room when you leave.
  • Instead of turning on a light, open a window. You don't even have to open the actually window. Just pull back the curtains and open the blinds. I have a habit of doing this, and you should too! The less you keep your lights on, the less electricity you're using.
  • Don't leave a fridge or freezer open. They use electricity to make the cold air, and if you let all the cold air out, it has to use more electricity. If you checked five minutes ago, you don't need to check again. There is nothing new there.
  • Don't waste the batteries on your device by scrolling endlessly on Instagram or TikTok for example, for no reason. I'm guilty. Every weekend, I find myself on Instagram for hours, but I'm going to try to do this less for electricity's sake! If you waste the batteries on your device, then you have to plug it in again and then you're using more electricity. Use less screen time!
  • Use renewable energy. Wind turbines use the wind and turn it into electricity, so it is very renewable. Non-renewable energy comes from things like coal, where they take a resource that we do not have an endless supply of, and turn it into energy. Other examples of renewable energy are sunlight, tides, geothermal heat, and rain.

  1. Canada is the third largest producer of hydroelectricity in the world? Woah! I didn't know that! Once again, great post! I love how in depth your research is! I think our usage of electricity has increased last year/this year because of online learning and all. Awesome job!

  2. Thank you so much! Yes, I agree that that is probably the reason why we use so much more, but it is still so much! I hope that we can lower this amount. Thanks again!
