Women Rights Are Human Rights!

Did you know that women still don't have the same rights as men? That's right! The first time women were allowed to vote was in 1893 in New Zealand! The first time in Canada was 1918, 103 years ago! But women's rights are human rights, so that shouldn't have been okay. Women should have the same rights as men.

But, luckily, we have made progress. Now women are allowed to work and vote. In 1919 women were allowed to hold office in the Canadian Parliament. Though we have made lots of progress, there is still a ways to go. Nothing but the voting rights are completely sexist-free.

Some people think that by giving rights to women, we're taking them away from men, but the true definition of feminism is just to give men and women equal rights. Lots of people think of men first when someone mentions a pilot, fire fighter, or police officer. In fact, at school, I was taught that police officers were policemen, and that is very sexist. Police officers can be anyone and it's not okay to teach the next generation that it's policemen.

Although we've made progress with this problem, women aren't always paid as much as men. They can get the same jobs but men still get more money. Years ago, women had to stay at home and cook, clean, and care for the children. Nowadays, they have more of a choice. They can still stay at home, but they could also have a job.

On August 5th of 1888, 39-year-old Bertha Benz drove from Mannheim to Pforzheim without consent from her husband nor the authorities. Along with Benz, her sons Richard and Eugen, ages thirteen and fifteen, were also in the car. She became the first woman to drive an automobile.

On January 1st in 1918, Luella Bates began working for the Four Wheel Drive Auto Cooperation. Working as a test driver during World War I, Bates travelled through Wisconsin in a Model B truck. The company let the majority of the women go after the war, but Luella remained as a driver and demonstrator. Bates traveled to New York City in January in 1920 where she attended the New York Auto Show. While she was there, she became he first female truck driver to receive a drivers license in New York. Four Wheel Drive sent Bates on three tours throughout the United States to introduce the sexist idea that the truck was so easy to drive a women could do it.

I don't see any reason why women shouldn't be appreciated and respected as much as men are, seeing all this evidence saying 'women are awesome!' Women should have the same rights and opportunities as men.

As always, the following are some solutions to help with this problem.

  • Treat women and men the same way: the way you would want to be treated. Neither men nor women are superior than the other. Men and women are different and have different qualities, but that doesn't mean it's okay to treat them as lesser. You should treat them both the way you wanted to be treated; you wouldn't want to be disrespected, would you?
  • Teach men that it's not hard to respect women. If you ever see or hear someone who doesn't think women should have the same rights as men, you should teach them about why they should want equal rights. You could also ask them to educate themselves and have them research why women should have the same rights.
  • Educate the next generation about this problem. We need to educate them about this before they learn to think it's okay to disrespect women. Some kids grow up with parents who think that women aren't as good as men and then the kid will grow up thinking that it's okay to disrespect women, even though it's not. If you teach your children that that is not okay, they will respect everyone equally when they're older. All children should know that they should have the same rights as anyone else, and if anyone ever thinks different, then they can educate that person on women's rights.
So, as you can see, women do not have the same rights as men and it is a problem. You should always be educating people on this and you should share the word and do everything in your power to help solve this problem. Together, we can change the world.
