Homelessness Numbers Are So High That You Could Be Next!
Did you know that there are over 5000 homeless people in Toronto? And over 3000 in Calgary? And more than 2000 in Edmonton? We know the names of these highly populated places, but we are never told how many people there are homeless!
20% of homeless people are young adults between the ages 16 and 24. Also, 47.5% are men between the ages of 25 and 55. Did you know that for every 100,000 youth, there are 308 homeless youth in Canada? Similarly, there are 310 homeless men for 100,000 men in Canada.
There were about 30,000 youth between 16 and 25 who experienced homelessness in 2009 and 1,500 more were unaccompanied youth less than 16 years old. 1,500 was only 1% of the overall homeless population! And did you know that almost 10,000 children lived in shelters in 2009? This is super high, especially for only children! We need to stop these numbers.
But, even though all these people need homes, homes use so many resources and take away natural habitats from animals! So how can we fix this?
Lots of places in Canada are adopting the Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness, which is amazing! It all started in 2000 when the National Alliance to End Homelessness released "A Plan, Not a Dream: How to End Homelessness in Ten Years", in which they explained that we need to stop trying to manage homelessness but end it.
Obviously, 10 years is a while and we haven't even started the plan yet, so we need other solutions first. Those are the following.
- Prevent homelessness. Pay your taxes and mortgage and keep earning enough money. Cooperate with tricky clients at work and don't lose your job. Maybe even try making money out of a hobby, liking starting a small business or publishing a book! Money is frustrating to deal with, but if you can keep it straight, you're on the right track.
- Make homeless people feel loved. Get them motivated to keep saving up for a place to live. For example, you could bring cookies to a homeless shelter, or lemonade in the summer or hot chocolate in the winter. Things like that make you happy and motivated, right? They're human too! They'll feel the same.
- Like in the last few articles I've written, I'll say it again. Appreciate what you have. Be happy you have a house and don't wish anything different. One day you might be sitting on the side of the street, holding a cardboard sign you found in someone's recycling bin, remembering and missing your house. Be happy you have a roof over your head!

Woah, 3000 in Calgary? That's a lot! I thought homelessness in cities like Calgary and Edmonton was very few but I think the reason for that misconception is because I never got to see homelessness from a first person point of view.
